If you’ve been paying attention to the frustrations that we’ve been dealing with after the OxygenOS 12 update began rolling out to OnePlus 9 owners, there’s a new chapter. The folks over at Android Police have shared a post from the Google Camera Port Updates Telegram group. In the group, it’s been revealed that if you are using OxygenOS 12 and want to use a GCam app, you will be disappointed to find out that you can’t.
For the unaware, GCam is a port of the Google Camera app that works with different devices. Developers port the app from Pixel devices, making the app compatible to work with other smartphones. By doing so, you’ll be able to enjoy Google’s image processing on non-Pixel phones.

Unfortunately, if you are running OxygenOS 12 on your OnePlus 9 or 9 Pro, you will only be able to use the GCam app with the main camera only. The additional ultra-wide, telephoto and monochrome sensors are inaccessible to the GCam app.

This also means that you won’t be able to use third-party camera apps such as Camera Zoom FX Premium, Camera MX, or Pixtica with the OnePlus 9. Considering that OnePlus has gone so far as to pull the update from rolling out, it’s just another example of how we OnePlus seems to have lost its way.

The company was once seen as a beaming light in the Android world. Now, it just feels as though OnePlus is ready to go corporate and is just fine forcing ColorOS onto everyone and leaving the modding/tinkering community in the dust. Hopefully, OnePlus will reverse its course on the matter and at least bring back the option to use apps of our choosing.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out and whether the company will respond, but until then, it’s just another frustrating blemish.
